CPCAB Level 5 Diploma in Counselling with Substance Misuse Theory & Interventions

This course is for individuals who want to gain specialist counselling knowledge and skills to work with individuals with substance misuse issues. It is aimed at those who are working in the drug/alcohol field.


The course is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. It has been validated by the Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) and awarded Advanced Practitioner Status by the National Counselling Society (NCS)

Course Content

Candidates will undertake modules in the following areas:

  • Context and trends in Substance Misuse
  • Models of Treatment (including Pharmacological) and Intervention
  • Assessment Tools/Psychometrics
  • The Therapeutic relationship and its impact on substance misuse interventions
  • Ethics
  • Working with Trauma
  • Impact of substance misuse on the family


Course Requirements (to be completed during the course)

  • A minimum of 60 formally contracted counselling hours (one-to one)
  • Supervision Log
  • Supervisor’s Report
  • Enhanced Access NI Check
  • Assignments
  • Completed Portfolio
  • 90% attendance
  • Fees: £1550 (including £200 deposit) plus CBCAB registration fees

Course Outcome

As a result of the course candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • A multi-theoretical approach to working with substance misuse issues

Entry Requirements


In order to join the course you will need:

  • A Level 4 diploma qualification in counselling (or equivalent)
  • Experience of working with those with substance misuse issues
  • Application form and interview to be completed
  • A personal and professional reference
  • Membership of professional counselling body
